Why the Numbers Beat the Hype: What Denis Vasilev Taught Me About Competing
Denis Vasilev is one of the best to ever do it. Eleven world titles. Master of Sport, International Class. A coach who has shaped a generation of lifters, including me. Early in my career he was my coach, and a lot of what I do now started as something I stole from him and made my own. So when I got him on the podcast and we dug into how he actually competes, I paid attention.
Here's the biggest thing I took from that conversation, and it's the thing I'd hand any lifter who wants to perform when it counts: in this sport, the math beats the hype. Every time.
You cannot fake a kettlebell set
Let me start with the brutal part, because it's the foundation for everything else.
Kettlebell sport is the most honest sport I know. If you show up prepared, you've earned that number on the platform, and the set is just a revelation of the work you already did. If you show up UNPREPARED, there is nothing you can do about it in the moment. You can't hype yourself into a PR. You can't will your way to reps that aren't in your hands. The bell does not care how loud the music is or how fired up you got in the warmup room.
That cuts both ways, and the second way is the one people miss. You can lose a set you were ready for by getting in your head. But you can't win a set you weren't ready for by getting lucky. As Denis put it, a PR will not happen by accident.
So if the preparation is already done or already not done by the time you step on the platform, what's left? The decision about WHAT NUMBER to chase. And that's where most lifters blow themselves up.
Know your real number before you grip the bell
Here's the move. Before Denis lets emotion into the room, he figures out, coldly, what his body can actually do that day.
He's got the data. He knows the work he did. He knows his pre-competition test results: a seven-minute set two reps above pace, a five-minute set one rep above, a strong last minute. He checks his hands, his back, his shoulders. No blisters, no tweaks, body feels good. He runs the checkpoints like a pilot before takeoff. And from all of that, he arrives at a realistic target for TODAY.
Maybe today's honest number is 80, not the 90 he hit on his best day ever. Fine. Eighty is the mark. Then, and only then, does he pour every ounce of spirit into hitting it.
This is the part that flips people's intuition. They think a "humble" target means an easy day. Denis says the opposite, and he's right: that calculated, realistic number will be the hardest set you ever do. Because you're not in peak shape, and you're going to need all your motivation just to hit the honest number. There's nothing soft about it.
The discipline is refusing to let a good warmup talk you into a fantasy. "I feel amazing, I'll go for nine." No. Emotions will NEVER overpower your actual physical condition. They just write a check your body can't cash. Pick the wrong number, let the feelings run too hot, run a bad pacing strategy off the back of it, and the bells fight back. They are always there to humble you if you come in proud or cocky.
The data is also where the calm comes from
Now here's the beautiful part, the reason this isn't just cold accounting.
The same numbers that keep you honest are the numbers that keep you steady. Denis told me his spreadsheet gives him confidence. When the nerves show up before a comp, he doesn't fight them with a pep talk. He interrogates them. Why am I nervous? Am I not ready? Then he walks the checkpoints. I started this cycle on this exact date. I passed my seven-minute test. My hands are good, my back is good, my shoulders are good. Not injured. So it should work. Let's go.

The point stands: the data argues you OUT of the fear. If you can hit seven minutes at pace and everything feels good, there's no reason to shake. The evidence is right there. You earned it in training; the comp is just collecting on it.
I felt this myself when Denis coached me. The spreadsheet was a game changer. I could see the math. I knew I could hit 140 reps on jerk with the 20s because in my seven-minute test I held 14 RPM all the way through and stayed comfortable. That's not hope. That's a receipt. My performance anxiety dropped through the floor, because I stopped guessing and started reading the numbers I'd already put on the page.
How to use this, whatever your level
You don't need to be chasing a world title to run this playbook. Here's the whole thing, boiled down:

Do the honest work, consistently. Denis says the number one problem he sees in athletes isn't mobility or technique. It's just showing up three times a week. Every workout you skip drops your odds, and you know it. No real prep, no real number. There's no shortcut to fake later.

Build a test that predicts your result. A timed set at pace. A seven-minute hold. Something repeatable that tells you, in numbers, where you actually are right now. Track it.

On the day, calculate before you motivate. Read your data. Check your body. Set the realistic target for TODAY. Don't let a hot warmup rewrite it.

Then go all in on that number. Once it's set, attack it with everything. The honest target deserves your full fire; it's going to take all of it.

Let the receipts kill the nerves. When fear shows up, don't argue with it emotionally. Show it the evidence. You did the work. You passed the test. You're ready.
The hype merchants have it backwards. They think confidence comes from feeling fired up. It doesn't. Real confidence comes from KNOWING, and knowing comes from numbers you earned. Feelings lie. Receipts don't.
